Three Asian countries are important markets for China’s cable exports. These three countries occupy the top three positions in China’s cable export market in South Asia: India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with respective shares of 73%, 14%, and 9%, totaling 96%.
India will continue to be the most important market for China's wire and cable products in South Asia. This is because India's economy continues to maintain a good development momentum. It is expected that India's economic growth rate may catch up with China around 2010. In addition, the development of downstream industries in India's wire and cable sector is also accelerating.
India's current power generation capacity is 130,000 megawatts, but its power industry development lags behind. In May 2007, the Indian Prime Minister stated that India would build hundreds of power stations over the next five years. By 2012, India's power generation capacity needs to reach at least 200,000 megawatts to address the power shortage problem. The construction of new power stations and other facilities will directly drive the growth in demand for wire and cable.
According to the report "Pakistan Energy Sector Restructuring Plan" released by the Asian Development Bank, Pakistan's electricity demand will increase by about 2 million kilowatts annually over the next 10 years. An annual investment of more than $2 billion in electricity is needed to meet this demand. In the coming years, the demand for wire and cable in Pakistan will also increase.
In other South Asian countries, although the demand for wire and cable is also increasing and there are trade opportunities, due to the smaller overall market capacity of these countries, the growth space for exports is limited.
