Yesterday, the teaching staff brought two students with the best academic performance to Chengdu to broaden their horizons. Cai Bin said, "When I return to my original life track, I find that there are so many attachments and reluctances to the place I just left. That love and being loved are hard to let go."

Yesterday at noon, at the 1810 Bistro on Zijin North Road, a group of children were having a rich lunch accompanied by their parents at a table by the window. A welcoming party for "Teacher Cai and the little friends" was being held here. The full name of Teacher Cai is Cai Bin, a volunteer teacher, and the little friends who were welcomed were his two students from the school where he taught.

Dream Chaser: Cai Bin, 43 years old, in February this year, he resigned from his position as director of a department in the Sichuan Border Defense Bureau to teach in Xichang, saying he wanted to do something valuable in his lifetime.

The section chief resigned to become a volunteer teacher. "Children in the countryside never eat breakfast. One of my students only eats dinner every day." Cai Bin asked the children, "Are you hungry?" "No."

Cai Bin, 43 years old, was previously a director in the Sichuan Border Defense Bureau. Last year, he saw online that in many places in Xichang, children in remote villages and pastoral areas have to walk for five hours to go to school, and some children in remote cities have no schools to attend. "At that time, I had the impulse to go there to teach," Cai Bin said, "I am from Beichuan, so I can understand the hardships of children in the mountains. I am over 40 years old, and I want to do something meaningful."

This February, at the beginning of the new semester, Cai Bin went alone to Muli in Xichang. The school where he taught was at the foot of the mountain in Heping Village, Shawan Township, Muli County. The entire school only had two classes, first grade and second grade, and Cai Bin was responsible for teaching the second grade. Here, every day he had to light a fire to cook, and there were no fresh fruits or vegetables all year round. Wrapping two cooked potatoes in a plastic bag was what the children ate for each meal. "Children in the countryside never eat breakfast. One of my students only eats dinner every day." Cai Bin asked the children, "Are you hungry?" "No." "The children smiled, but I couldn't laugh at all. I spent every day in shock, feeling more responsible to teach these students well." This summer vacation, Cai Bin decided to bring out the two students with the best grades from his class to increase their understanding of the city.

Mountain Children See the City

From home to Chengdu, they experienced too many firsts: the first time sitting on a bus, the first time seeing skyscrapers, the first time eating pizza, etc.

The two children Cai Bin brought out are named Wang Zihui, 7 years old; and Yang Changqing, 10 years old. The two children, wearing white T-shirts, had round eyes filled with curiosity on their sun-tanned faces. "This is French fries, this is pizza, this is spaghetti..." At the dining table, a little boy enthusiastically introduced the dishes to Yang Changqing. "Chengdu has so many lights, red and green. When I return home and can't see them anymore, I will draw them all down." Wang Zihui opened his big eyes wide; this was his first time coming to Chengdu. "Previously, only our older sister came to Chengdu. When I return home, I will tell my parents about the fun things here."

Upon arriving in Chengdu, Yang Changqing was somewhat shy and spoke little, while the Chengdu child Duan Yutian beside him acted like an older brother, not only serving him delicious food but also teaching him games and comics. "I really like playing with these two younger brothers. If there's an opportunity in the future, I would also like to visit their homes."

Cai Bin said that those who attended the welcoming meeting were all his friends in Chengdu, including bar owners and real estate executives. In the past six months, they have been continuously donating money and goods to the school where Cai Bin teaches. Sichuan football star Zou Yougen arrived at the scene with his wife and 8-year-old daughter.

"I learned about it from a friend. In April this year, I sent them several large boxes of books." Zou Yougen said, "If there's an opportunity, I will definitely take my daughter to the village."
