The title may seem a bit flashy, but the serious truth is that there are indeed several people who earn millions of dollars entirely online. Obviously, though, when you hear that someone has made this kind of money, you might be inclined to think it’s a hoax and move on. This is likely because most "here's how I made a million dollars" stories are nothing more than sales hype. Many in the Internet Marketing (IM) industry believe the easiest way to make money is to offer others a way to make money. Sometimes, when you develop a good system, it can meet your needs. More often, however, you’ll only make a little extra cash. Here’s how to genuinely create thousands of dollars online.

The first thing you need to do is choose a topic you're passionate about and focus on that. It's not written anywhere, beyond a doubt, that the best way to make money is to work in the IM market and sell IM products. If you're passionate about the environment, for example, that should be what your website is about. When you use a subject you genuinely love, you'll be more likely to stick with it, put honest effort into what you’re doing, and care deeply about your work.

Work hard to build a reputation as an expert. The higher your standing, the more people will reach out to you when they need advice. Always remember that you need a professional reputation for more than just selling things. You need it so people can hire you to create things for them or coach them on projects similar to yours. An expert-level reputation is what gets you noticed both offline and online.

Don’t just focus on product creation or sales. Focus on truly building relationships within your niche community. Engage with market-related forums. Reach out to people in your niche with words of encouragement for their contributions. Leave positive feedback on people’s websites. Don’t try to sell anything when you do this. The goal is to form relationships so you'll be the first person they think of when asked, "Do you know anybody who…?"

If the site you’ve built consistently earns money through advertising, don't let yourself accept a sale through Flippa. If your blog has a good reputation and you're regularly making reliable, high-dollar income but you want to sell the site, hire an investment banker to sell it for you. An investment banker managing the sale lends much more credibility to what you're offering, can act as the middleman, and will be better able to sell your website to someone with deep pockets who can pay well for it.

Above all else, don’t forget to have fun—after all, if you don’t enjoy what you do, why are you always doing it?
