Below, Changchun Guomao will recount a painful past from Guo Degang's early days in Beijing. In 1995, Guo Degang began his journey in Beijing and established Deyunshe in 1996. At its inception, they were not only marginalized by their peers, but some even went out of their way to politicize and report their performance content. Guo Degang knew well that the old-school江湖 (jianghu) atmosphere in Beijing's crosstalk community was very strong, with great emphasis placed on lineage and generational relationships. His master, Yang Zhigang, was a crosstalk performer from Tianjin who rarely interacted with performers in the capital. To gain a foothold in Beijing, Guo Degang had the idea of re-拜师学徒 (seeking a new master) in Beijing. The first person he thought of was Li Jindou, who had good relations in the crosstalk community. Following advice, Guo Degang brought gifts and sought out Li Jindou's home. As soon as he entered, Guo Degang said nothing and immediately knelt down, asking Li Jindou to take him as a disciple. After understanding Guo Degang's intentions, Li Jindou not only refused but also scolded him. He told Guo Degang, "Since you are already Mr. Yang Zhigang's disciple, one day as a teacher is a lifetime as a father; you cannot forget your teacher's grace just because the environment has changed. Besides, I am of the same generation as Mr. Yang, and we have a very close relationship. How can I take on his disciple?" Thus, Li Jindou rejected Guo Degang's request to become his disciple, leaving Guo Degang no choice but to leave Li Jindou's house with the gifts still in hand. Later, he approached Hou Yuewen and became a disciple under the Hou family, which led to a falling out with his original master, Yang Zhigang.
