"Doctor said I am too fat to have the surgery", "Man suspected his wife of having an affair, released gas after taking drugs to end up with his mother-in-law", a visible spectrophotometer can be seen. Ms. Zhang from Laixi encountered trouble when giving birth at the local hospital during her due date. On May 25th, it was learned from the Third People's Hospital that Ms. Zhang gained 100 pounds during her pregnancy and weighed 273 pounds by the time she reached her due date. On May 24th, due to the patient being too fat, regional anesthesia could not be administered as the needle could not penetrate through to the bone, so the doctor had to perform a cesarean section under general anesthesia, delivering an 8-pound male infant. Currently, both mother and child are safe.
Gained one hundred pounds during pregnancy
On the afternoon of the 25th, when reporters visited the gynecology and obstetrics ward of the Third People's Hospital, Ms. Zhang who had just given birth lay on the bed almost occupying the entire space. "The child and the mother are doing well now," Mr. Jiang, Ms. Zhang's husband introduced. They are from Laixi but do business in Licang. He is 26 years old, and his wife is 25.
"She particularly enjoyed eating fruits during her pregnancy," Mr. Jiang introduced. His wife ate all kinds of fruits during her pregnancy, and in large quantities. She could eat a whole watermelon in a day, and by the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, she would eat six meals a day, consuming two steamed buns in one meal. "In these ten months, she gained a hundred pounds." Mr. Jiang mentioned that his wife weighed over 170 pounds before pregnancy and reached 273 pounds by the time she was about to give birth.
Mr. Jiang introduced that after his wife was four months pregnant, they went to the hospital for an ultrasound. The doctor said that the fetus had two loops around its neck, so they planned for a cesarean section. As the 25th was his wife's due date, they came to the hospital ahead of time to check in.
Too fat for regional anesthesia
"When I saw her, I felt like a giant stood in front of me." Director Miao Huayan of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Third People's Hospital recalled that on the 23rd, she met a special pregnant woman during her clinic hours. This pregnant woman was extremely fat, and her body wobbled as she walked. Combined with the large belly due to pregnancy, it seemed difficult for her to walk. "She asked me first if the cesarean section could be performed with regional anesthesia," Miao Huayan said.
It was introduced that Ms. Zhang and her husband had gone to the local hospital before, but the doctors there said she was too fat to administer regional anesthesia, so they suggested she go to another hospital.
"Our anesthesia needle is only 10 centimeters long, but the distance from her subcutaneous tissue to the bone is twelve or thirteen centimeters, making it impossible for the needle to penetrate," Miao Huayan explained. Due to her excessive weight, the needle length was insufficient, so regional anesthesia couldn't be performed.
"In this case, we could only perform general anesthesia," Miao Huayan explained. Normally, cesarean sections do not use general anesthesia because it requires the patient to stop autonomous breathing and rely on a tracheal tube for respiration. In such a situation, prolonged periods might cause fetal asphyxiation, which is very dangerous. However, since Ms. Zhang couldn't undergo regional anesthesia, the doctors had no choice but to perform general anesthesia. "We increased the number of staff by double, with internal medicine doctors and pediatricians standing by," Miao Huayan introduced. After the efforts of the medical staff, an eight-pound male infant was delivered via cesarean section. "From the current situation, there seems to be nothing abnormal with the mother and child."
Pregnant women should have a reasonable diet
Miao Huayan introduced that this was the heaviest pregnant woman they had ever encountered. Overweight mothers not only make childbirth difficult but also easily harm both the mother and the fetus. Miao Huayan said that some citizens believe that eating more during pregnancy will result in stronger and healthier babies, but this is not true. Excessive "supplementation" for pregnant women can lead to nutritional excess, which may cause complications in pregnancy.
"Eating too many fruits can also lead to weight gain, and diabetes is more likely to occur," when talking about overweight pregnant women, Zhang Zhanhong from the Maternal and Child Health Hospital also had deep feelings. They often encounter overweight mothers, and she explained that most fruits contain high sugar content while fat and protein content is relatively low, so excessive fruit intake can lead to elevated blood sugar levels in pregnant women. "Reasonable dietary planning for pregnant women is very important."
Additionally, Miao Huayan reminded that pregnant women should regularly undergo prenatal check-ups. Like Ms. Zhang, whose weight increased so much, this is partly related to not undergoing regular prenatal examinations.
