On July 8, in Beijing, Xiaogan University student Yang Liwei, who came from Wuhan, donated hematopoietic stem cells (commonly known as bone marrow donation) at the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force General Hospital (referred to as Beijing Kongzong). On the same day, these hematopoietic stem cells were urgently delivered to Shanghai and transplanted into Dongdong (a pseudonym), a 12-year-old boy with leukemia.
It is understood that today, Yang Liwei will undergo additional collection of hematopoietic stem cells.
In mid-June, Yang Liwei successfully matched with Dongdong. Unfortunately, the donation time coincided with his final exams, but he firmly stated that he was willing to skip the exams to save a life. Fortunately, the school learned about the situation and specially adjusted his exam schedule (as previously reported by our newspaper). His righteous actions moved many netizens and attracted significant media attention, including from CCTV.
During the donation process, Yang Liwei appeared very relaxed. He had kept his trip to Beijing a secret from his parents.
After the donation, Director Hong Junling of the China Marrow Donor Program personally presented Yang Liwei with a certificate. He highly praised Yang Liwei's selfless act, stating, "Currently, people's perceptions about donating bone marrow need to change, and Yang Liwei is an excellent role model." A small body filled with great courage

Let love connect through the marrow, and sing together with life.
On October 18, 2009, when Yang Liwei, a university student at the New Technology College of Xiaogan University, registered to join the Hubei branch of the China Marrow Donor Program, he did not expect that just over a year later, his fate would be closely linked with an unknown little boy, making him a benefactor to a family in Shanghai.
His bright smile under the sunlight
This time, the hematopoietic stem cells to be collected require his entire blood circulation more than twice - Wang Hengxiang, director of the hematology department at Beijing Kongzong.
July 8 was an ordinary day, with sunlight pouring down on every corner of the capital city. However, this day at Beijing Kongzong in Haidian District was destined to be anything but quiet.
At 7:30 AM, outside the blood cell separator on the 12th floor of the hematology department, there was already a crowd gathered, with numerous media outlets focusing their cameras on ward number 1221.
At 8:10 AM, Yang Liwei arrived. Seeing the sea of cameras, he smiled awkwardly. "I'm not used to being surrounded," he said. A few days earlier, Yang Liwei had helplessly told our reporter on QQ, "Actually, I just wanted to come quietly and leave quietly."
At 8:30 AM, Yang Liwei lay down on the hospital bed next to the blood cell separator. "Today's collection volume is approximately 55 milliliters," said Wang Hengxiang, director of the hematology department at Beijing Kongzong. "To collect this amount of hematopoietic stem cells, we need a blood circulation volume of 10,000 milliliters, which is more than twice the total amount of blood in his body."
During the collection process, Yang Liwei repeatedly displayed bright and relaxed smiles, fully cooperating with media questions coming from all directions in the ward.
"It's much simpler than I originally thought, just can't move, a bit boring," he suddenly became playful, shouting for his phone, "Even if it's just to play games far away." Medical staff handed him a rubber ball to squeeze in his right hand to help with blood flow. For the following time, this rubber ball became his "only toy."
At 11:40 AM, the collection was completed. Medical staff placed the blood bag containing 60 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension against Yang Liwei's cheek, allowing him to say goodbye to a part of his body. At this moment, the blood bag still retained his body temperature. After affectionately pressing the blood bag, Yang Liwei suddenly burst out with "It feels like giving birth," which made everyone at the scene laugh.
Finding you in the vast sea of humanity
Such a high compatibility rate is only one in ten thousand, Yang Liwei and Dongdong are truly destined - Liu JinHong, director of the Transplantation Department at Shanghai Daopei Hospital.
This is a donation spanning three regions. Yang Liwei traveled from Hubei to Beijing, and after the donation, his hematopoietic stem cells were immediately transported to Shanghai Daopei Hospital and transplanted into Dongdong, who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The process may sound brief, but achieving it is no simple task. "Yang Liwei and Dongdong are truly destined," said Dr. Liu JinHong of Shanghai Daopei Hospital in a telephone interview with our newspaper, his tone filled with admiration. "Many patients take over a year to find a matching donor, but Dongdong found Yang Liwei within a month; many volunteers participate in the bone marrow bank for eight to nine years without any opportunity to donate, but Xiao Yang encountered someone waiting for his help within less than two years. You see, their match is a perfect ten-point match, and such a high compatibility probability is only one in ten thousand."
Last night, our newspaper reached Dr. Liu JinHong. He said that by 8 PM, Yang Liwei's donated hematopoietic stem cells had been infused into Dongdong's body, but due to travel-related losses, the first collection was slightly short of the final transplant requirement. Yang Liwei will undergo another collection of hematopoietic stem cells.
Passionate love, though unseen, yet connected.
To encourage the stranger Dongdong, Yang Liwei wrote him a letter, saying: Since I knew about you, a sick younger brother from afar, my heart has been constantly tied to your condition! Your parents must have worried a lot about you and shed many tears! Therefore, I sincerely hope you recover soon and bring smiles back to your parents' faces! They are the ones who love and care for you the most!
Youth becomes textured through contribution
A small body filled with great courage - Yang Liwei
A small body filled with great courage is Yang Liwei's QQ signature.
Doctors say that technological advancements have made the bone marrow donation process painless, but it still requires some courage. Yang Liwei's decision to put aside his studies to save a life is the best manifestation of his courage.
Actually, this time coming to Beijing to donate bone marrow, Yang Liwei has been keeping it a secret from his parents at home, only his older brother and uncle know. About an hour into the collection process, he suddenly softly said, "I miss my mom." Then he quietly added, "I am saving a life, my mom gave me life, so this is also her contribution to others."
At that moment, his eyes, which had always been smiling, suddenly filled with tears. "I'll go home in a few days and tell my mom about this myself."
Before leaving the blood cell separation room, Yang Liwei looked up at a large cluster of paper cranes hanging in the air. The nurse introduced that these cranes were sent by caring individuals in Beijing and have been hanging here for years, witnessing the loving donations of volunteer after volunteer.
Yang Liwei is the 2263rd donor of the China Marrow Donor Program and the 80th in Hubei Province.
Yang Liwei takes his last exam in Beijing today
School faxes the exam papers, test center set up in the hospital
According to reports, Yang Liwei will complete his last final exam in Beijing on July 9.
It is understood that this special exam subject is electrical engineering technology, and the test center is set up in the cadre ward of Beijing Kongzong. This ward is also where Yang Liwei resides during his stay in Beijing. The exam papers are faxed from the New Technology College of Xiaogan University to the hospital's confidential room, then escorted from the hospital's confidential room to the ward, with soldiers standing guard outside the ward.
After the exam, Yang Liwei will have a direct phone call with Dongdong in Shanghai, which will be their first direct contact.
Classmate postpones return home to cheer for Yang Liwei
Chutian Metropolis Daily reporter Wang Jinniang, correspondent Lei Di
On July 8, the first day of summer vacation for students at the New Technology College of Xiaogan University, it was also the day sophomore Yang Liwei donated hematopoietic stem cells in Beijing. For this reason, Bai Xianglong, a classmate from Zhangjiakou, Hebei, deliberately postponed his return home date when buying train tickets, even though he had been away from his parents for over five months and was eager to return.
"He is the pride of our class and our school. Although we couldn't personally go to Beijing to accompany him,
waiting by the TV, blessing him and cheering for him, I believe he can feel it," said Bai Xianglong.
Liu Dekai, who has already graduated and currently works at a company in Wuhan Optics Valley, also returned specially. He told us that when he saw the news about Yang Liwei donating bone marrow to save a life in our newspaper, he asked his juniors for information, hoping to see him off before he left, but "he was so low-key that he slipped away quietly." Later, upon learning that stem cells would be collected in Beijing on July 8, Liu Dekai immediately asked for leave from his company and returned to his alma mater, "just to give him some encouragement and support."
Around noon, good news was relayed back by accompanying teacher Lu Jun: Yang Liwei had successfully completed the hematopoietic stem cell donation, and the entire process went exceptionally smoothly. Hearts that had been anxiously suspended finally eased.
