Our reporter Han Dapeng and intern reporter Tian Binqi report: On the evening of the previous night, a family of three was unfortunately hit by a south-to-north-bound No. 596 bus when they were crossing the road outside the west gate of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Chaoyang District. After treatment, the father and child were out of danger, but the mother left forever.
Xiaozhang, the security guard at the west gate of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, said that around 8 p.m. the other night, two adults with a girl walked out from the west gate and crossed the road from the pedestrian walkway on the north side of the street. When the three reached the middle of the road, there was a sound of emergency braking, followed by a loud bang. Xiaozhang saw them fall to the ground, and a No. 596 bus stopped not far away, its front windshield completely shattered. Several passengers got off one after another, "the driver was stunned, sitting motionless in his seat."
Xiaozhang said that among the three who were knocked down, a middle-aged woman was seriously injured, with large pools of blood around her. The man lay on the ground unable to move. The girl got up first, crying loudly while trying to shake the woman's body, "probably a family of three." Then the man woke up and ran to the woman quickly. The onlookers called for help. The incident happened near the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, and the emergency personnel sent the three to the hospital for treatment.
The reporter saw at the scene that the road section where the accident occurred was not wide. The pedestrian crossing where the accident happened was not far from the bus stop, without traffic lights installed. There was a No. 596 bus stop 20 meters south of it. About 5 meters north of the bus stop was an intersection with traffic lights. Some people speculated that the bus encountered a changing light when leaving the station, and the driver accelerated to pass through, causing the tragedy. This statement has not been officially confirmed.
Yesterday afternoon, the involved man shook his head repeatedly when recalling the incident, only saying that they were a family of three, then lowered his head silently. The doctor said that due to the impact of the collision, the man suffered fractures in his arm and ribs, the girl had abrasions on her face, and the woman who was brought together was declared dead after unsuccessful rescue attempts.
According to relatives of the man, after the three were sent to the hospital, the girl was emotionally agitated, sobbing and calling out "I want Mommy". After learning about the death of the girl's mother, the family could only tell her "Mommy will be back home with us after the check-up." Yesterday afternoon, the family still dared not tell the girl this news.
Last night, the duty station master of the No. 596 bus fleet said that after the incident, the offending driver had been taken away for investigation, and the fleet was also waiting for the investigation results from the public security organs, and did not know the specific details. The First Passenger Transport Branch of Beijing Public Transport Group stated that this incident was still under investigation, and too many details were inappropriate to disclose. The Municipal Traffic Management Bureau stated that the blood sample of the bus driver had been extracted and sent for inspection, and whether the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol remained undetermined. The matter is still under further investigation.
