Chengdu girl Deng Xiaoye passed away at the age of 19 on February 16 due to central respiratory and circulatory failure caused by intracranial infection. Despite medical efforts to save her, she unfortunately left us. Her family donated her corneas to the Sichuan Red Cross Eye Bank. Yesterday morning at Chengdu Kangqiao Eye Hospital, her corneas were successfully transplanted into two patients.
The recipients were an 18-year-old boy Xiao Yi and a 51-year-old woman Jiang Xiuzhen. Xiao Yi was diagnosed with "keratoconus" in both eyes during his first year of high school. His corneas progressively thinned and bulged outward. The left eye was especially severe, showing signs of perforation, which was very dangerous. On the 26th, after receiving a phone call notification from Chengdu Kangqiao Eye Hospital, Xiao Yi's mother brought him from Shenzhen to Chengdu. On the same day, 51-year-old grandmother Jiang Xiuzhen from Yan'an, Shaanxi also arrived at the hospital. After diagnosis, Vice President Lian Hao of Chengdu Kangqiao Eye Hospital found that the elderly woman suffered from severe "corneal degeneration" in both eyes. The left eye was particularly dangerous; under the microscope, the edges of the cornea had already shown signs of damage.
Yesterday morning at around 10 o'clock, Xiao Yi and Jiang Xiuzhen successively underwent corneal transplant surgery. Vice President Lian Hao of Chengdu Kangqiao Eye Hospital stated that the surgery went very smoothly. Today, the bandages could be removed from both patients. Xiao Yi’s right eye will be able to see the world clearly again, while although Jiang Xiuzhen's left eye vision cannot be significantly improved, her issues of corneal degeneration perforation and eye pain will be resolved.
Another report: At about 1 o'clock in the morning yesterday, villager Wang En (a pseudonym) from Tumen Town, Mianzhu passed away due to illness. His wife Zhang Xirong (a pseudonym) immediately notified the Sichuan Red Cross Eye Bank.
According to Wang En's last wishes, his corneas will be specifically donated to the people of Jiangsu and Macao who are aiding in the reconstruction of Mianzhu. Currently, the Sichuan Red Cross Eye Bank and Chengdu Kangqiao Eye Hospital are contacting suitable recipients from these two areas through various channels.
