Begging with triplets: Local civil affairs department takes children home

Ten minutes before the train's departure, Mrs. Wang, the mother of the triplets, boarded the train. When she saw her children, Mrs. Wang was so overwhelmed with emotion that she couldn't speak. She hugged the triplets tightly and kissed them again and again. The children mumbled "Mom" incoherently.

Report from our newspaper (by reporter Su Wei and intern reporter Peining Zhu): A 50-year-old woman surnamed Zhang took care of her two-and-a-half-year-old triplet granddaughters alone in Beijing. Due to financial difficulties and limited mental capacity, she tied the triplet sisters with ropes and begged on the street. After learning about the situation, the staff of the Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau Rescue Center took them to the Fengtai District Rescue Station (our newspaper had previously reported continuously). Yesterday afternoon, relevant leaders from the Qiqihar Civil Affairs Bureau came to Beijing and took Ms. Zhang and the triplets away. Mrs. Wang, the mother of the triplets, also appeared at the same time and boarded the train back home with the triplets.

The mother of the triplets accompanied them back home.

After a brief farewell, Ms. Song stepped off the rescue vehicle and waved goodbye as the three children left. "I probably won't see them again in my lifetime," Ms. Song muttered.

At around 3 PM, I saw at Beijing Railway Station that Ms. Zhang and the staff of the Civil Affairs Bureau were waiting on the rescue vehicle. Ms. Kang from the Fengtai Rescue Station said that after multiple contacts, Mrs. Wang, the mother of the triplets, had already set out from Tianjin to come to Beijing Railway Station. She would return to her hometown with the triplets to handle procedures for low-income assistance and other relief measures.

At around 1 PM, accompanied by the staff of the Fengtai Rescue Station, Ms. Zhang returned to her rented place in Zhao Gongkou to pack her luggage and bid farewell to her neighbors. "All the things in the room were given by the neighbors, so I can't take them away." Taking the children's birth certificates, Ms. Zhang locked the door.

When Ms. Zhang returned to her rented place in Zhao Gongkou, Ms. Song, the landlord, was washing clothes. Seeing Ms. Zhang return, her first question was, "Where are the little ones?" Upon learning that Ms. Zhang and the triplets were being helped and would return to their hometown in the afternoon, Ms. Song turned to wipe her eyes.

"Every time their grandma went to buy groceries, we helped her look after the children. The three children were very understanding and obedient," Ms. Song said. Although they hadn't been together for long, the neighbors had already gotten used to seeing the three little girls running and playing in the damp, dim basement, "This has become a part of everyone's life."

Mr. Hu expressed that they would first temporarily accommodate the children at the rescue center and quickly arrange low-income assistance for them. "If the family still cannot support them, we will arrange for the children to enter an SOS Children's Village."

Landlord reluctant to let go

Father still no word

Yesterday morning, relevant leaders from the Qiqihar Rescue Station and the Nianzi Mountain District Civil Affairs Bureau arrived in Beijing and met with Ms. Zhang. They agreed to take the train back to Qiqihar that afternoon.

Mr. Hu, the station master of the Qiqihar Rescue Station, said that documents and signatures from the children's legal guardians were required to process low-income assistance and other relief measures, so the children's mother had to be present. When buying the tickets, they had already prepared tickets for Mrs. Wang, the mother of the triplets.

Mrs. Wang said that over the past two months, she had not abandoned her children but was working to earn money to support them. "The first month's salary was just handed over to the children's father who deceived me, and now I can't find him." Mrs. Wang said that it was only when she received a call from the reporter that she learned about her mother taking the children to beg.

Ms. Song insisted on sending Ms. Zhang to the train, "I want to see the children one more time." On the rescue vehicle, the three usually expressionless children all reached out their hands upon seeing Ms. Song, signaling "pick me up."
