Centipedes are oviparous animals. They usually mate after the rain on sunny days from March to June. Every year, at the end of spring and beginning of summer, the eggs gradually develop to maturity. Egg-laying begins in mid-June, with the peak period being early to mid-July, extending until early August. Before laying eggs, the mother's body becomes swollen, with her abdomen close to the ground and slow movement.

For mothers showing signs of egg-laying, about 3-4 days before, they should be individually covered with a bottomless canister about 10 cm in diameter. The canister opening should be covered with fiberboard or glass. This effectively utilizes the breeding area, avoiding mutual interference and predation, allowing centipedes to lay eggs smoothly in a quiet environment, and facilitating the separate tank (or pool) breeding of baby centipedes and mother centipedes.

Generally, each mother lays 20-60 eggs, and the smooth egg-laying process takes about 2-3 hours. The eggs stick together, similar in size to a peanut, and are elliptical in shape. The mother centipede guards the eggs for approximately 43 days.

During this period, if disturbed or subjected to other external stimuli, the mother may become agitated and eat all the hatching egg masses, leading to hatching failure. Therefore, it is essential to maintain absolute quietness in the hatching pool environment. It is particularly important to note that feeding should be stopped a few days before the centipede lays eggs, especially during the 40-50-day hatching process when feeding should be strictly prohibited. Otherwise, the centipede might eat food that sticks to the egg mass or embryo, eating the egg mass or embryo together. The hatching process is relatively slow; after 15-16 days, the eggs form a kidney-like shape and start to crack open, marking the first molt. After 20 days, the second molt forms a crescent shape, initially resembling an immature insect. After 35-40 days, the young enter the third molt and can crawl up and down within the mother's embrace. After another 5-7 days, the young centipede's exoskeleton thickens, turning yellowish-brown, living under the mother's protection. After a month, they can live independently, finding their own food.

III. Precautions

When breeding centipedes, attention should be paid to potential viral infections that centipedes may encounter. Additionally, breeding personnel should prevent being stung and poisoned by centipedes.

1. Preventing centipedes from suffering diseases: Due to threats from poultry, rats, stone dragons, etc., which prey on centipedes, especially ants being the main natural enemy of centipedes, regular observation should be conducted inside and outside the centipede field to prevent these natural enemies from entering the pool and attacking centipedes. To prevent ants from entering the pool, use roach and ant powder pens to draw several circles around the pool, or mix one part camphor balls and plant oil with five parts sawdust, and frequently sprinkle this powder on the outer wall of the breeding pool.
