As parents, it's our responsibility to educate, guide and encourage our children. If we do our job well, they will grow up to be responsible adults who contribute to society. That's not too much pressure, right? Teaching practical life skills and philosophy is an important part of raising competent and happy adults. The time we spend with our children is precious and short. With that in mind, I would like to share with you 40 things I want to teach my children before they leave home. Some are serious, some are light-hearted, because I think an important part of building a meaningful relationship with your children is having fun along the way.

Practical life skills I will teach them:

- How to shop wisely, including planning meals, shopping with a list, comparing prices at different stores, which can save them a lot of time and money.

- Cooking and baking are far more valuable than opening cans or reheating leftovers.

- It's important to sort laundry not only by color but also by fabric type and care instructions.

- Regardless of fashion trends, use an iron when attending interviews, jobs or special occasions. Wearing wrinkled clothes shows laziness.

- How to plant and care for plants. This is a simple and inexpensive way to instill a sense of responsibility. I'll start with easy-to-care-for potted plants like umbrella trees or red caps or potted tomatoes.

- How to change a car tire, so they won't be stranded on the side of the road if they get a flat.

- Drive responsibly and understand the consequences of drunk driving, even as a passenger.

- If they go to the library frequently, they can save money on books.

- How to maintain a car, such as changing oil and various filters, how to add fuel and water, and replace bulbs.

- How to read a bus schedule, so if they can't afford a car, they can still get around using public transportation.

- They will have a lot of fun making things from scratch. I can think of birdhouses, ladders, small racing cars, kites and paper airplanes.

- How to tie all kinds of knots, so they will be prepared when they need to secure a boat or pull a car out of a ditch or snowbank.

- How to make delicious barbecues, paying special attention to preparation before grilling and special cooking secrets.

- The importance of reading food labels. Not only should they understand the ingredients, but also the sugar, additives and fats contained in the food.

- How to hem pants, sew buttons, patch socks.

- How to type with both hands. In this computer-saturated society, learning to type correctly can improve efficiency and productivity.

- The concept of compound interest. Who wouldn't want to make money with compound interest?

- How to plan an effective budget that ensures living while increasing net worth.

- How to read maps and use a compass.

- How to build a snow shelter to protect against cold nights. (A snow shelter is actually just a hollowed-out pile of snow, it's very warm to sleep in! This was one of my favorite experiences as a child.)

- How to swim and wade, these skills could save their lives.

Philosophical life lessons I will teach them:

- If they choose to be happy, they can be happy.

- Smiling is the simplest way to make someone else have a good day.

- Empathy and how to transcend sympathy by truly understanding and feeling another person's suffering. Once they have this understanding and genuinely want to help alleviate others' pain, they will become better people.

- There is no such thing as "too polite." "Please," "Thank you," and "Sorry" can never be overused.

- Pure listening without judging, criticizing or offering solutions to problems is a foolproof way to show someone you care.

- Respect is not just about being kind to elders, it also includes taking care of things, being kind to everyone, loving animals, and even yourself.

- Focus on enjoying what you already have rather than wasting time focusing on what you don't have.

- No one knows everything about everything.

- It's okay to make mistakes because that's how we learn.

- Pursue what suits them rather than blindly following what society thinks they should do. The less traveled road often yields the greatest rewards.

- No one cares about your money as much as you do, so choose your investments and financial advisors wisely.

- People usually do the best they can with the information and knowledge they have at hand.

- If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

- The more they cling to an idea or belief, the greater their disappointment (pain) when plans fall through.

- Friends come and go, but family will always be there for them. It's always been this way.

- Be generous and kind to those who are less fortunate, they will gain far more from it than they can imagine.

- Life is short, they should make the most of every day. They should do things that make them happy, energetic, and full of vitality.

- Remember that life is more about enjoying the journey than just reaching the destination.

- When encountering problems, don't jump to conclusions, your helpers are often right beside you, including your boss.

I have so much I want to teach my children, and the length of this list grows every day. Like any parent, I hope my children succeed. Occasionally, I need to remind myself that they are independent little people on their own life journeys.

How I see my role as a parent - I'm here to guide them, teach them, and make sure they have enough skills, knowledge, and common sense to survive and thrive on their own once they leave home. Time will tell if I've done a good job as a parent.

How do you plan to teach your children? What is the best life lesson you have learned?
