Regarding this, Zhao Wei's agent, Chen Rong, claimed: "First, we barely know Wang Yi and Li Tao; second, Zhao Wei at that time only participated in a simple business event, and it was the PR company that invited us." Liu Fangfei: accused of receiving 2 million yuan for repaying loans. Both Liu Fangfei and Zhao Wei denied any involvement in the Wang Yi case. In the "Glorious Alumni Newsletter," there is an article titled "Our Beloved Teacher Wang Yi." The article states, "It is really hard to describe Teacher Wang Yi's identity. A financier? A musician? A historian? Or perhaps 'Teacher Wang Yi' as the Guanghua people call him more affectionately. It is really difficult to define Teacher Wang Yi's temperament. The sincerity and passion of a poet; the profundity and introversion of a historian; the decisiveness and rigor of a financier; we would rather see him as a lovable and respectable teacher and friend with philosophical reasoning, historical retrospection, and literary excitement."
The Guangzhou Daily reported on March 31st that at 9:30 am yesterday, Wang Yi, with gray hair, wearing a gray cotton jacket, was escorted into the courtroom by court police. Wang Yi looked to be in good spirits, and he first scanned the audience seats, but his family did not attend the hearing.
In the courtroom, Wang Yi had a very good attitude towards confessing, saying: "These matters are all true. This is me using direct power and influence beyond power to seek benefits for others, and I have also gained benefits."
Li Tao testified that CCTV host Liu Fangfei (pronunciation) bought a house in Beijing with a monthly payment of over ten thousand yuan. Therefore, Wang Yi let Li Tao give Liu Fangfei 2 million yuan to repay her mortgage. Later, when Wang Yi's incident was investigated, he let Liu Fangfei return the 2 million yuan to Li Tao and let Liu Fangfei give Li Tao 40,000 yuan in interest.
Chen Rong further emphasized: "We do not want to be involved in such matters, and we basically do not know those people."
When reporters called Liu Fangfei yesterday and mentioned Wang Yi's name, Liu Fangfei quickly said: "Sorry, this matter has nothing to do with me, I don't want to talk about anything." Then she hung up the phone.
Wang Yi's second bribe amount was through his younger brother Wang Lei, helping a businessman named Zhou from Yunnan arrange a loan and accepting bribes of around 6.3 million yuan from Zhou in 12 installments through Wang Lei or himself directly. Wang Yi's third bribe amount was helping a person named Wang Lei (this Wang Lei is not Wang Yi's younger brother) manage loans for other enterprises, and this Wang Lei received a benefit fee of 3 million yuan, while Wang Yi asked this Wang Lei for 300,000 yuan.
Power cultivates a "literary temperament"
While indulging in his own "professor" identity, Wang Yi suddenly got inspired by music a few years ago. According to Wang Yi himself, in 2002, he traveled with a group of young people on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the grandeur and beauty of the motherland activated his "musical gene." He sang as he wandered, and when he returned to Beijing, he had already sung songs like "In the Future We Will Love Each Other," "Olympic Sentiment," and "You Under the Rainbow." In 2006, Wang Yi completed the composition of "Ode to China" and held its premiere on December 9th by the Chinese Symphony Orchestra in Beijing, after which he couldn't stop. In February 2007, the revised "Ode to China" was performed three times in Beijing, and then the third version of "Ode to China" went on tour to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and other places, performing 17 times within half a year.
According to informed sources, Liu Fangfei indeed once had a romantic relationship with Wang Yi, and two years ago, they were even photographed together during a trip. Former CCTV host and Peking University professor Ai Yi wrote on Weibo: "Now Sister Fangfei is in trouble, being implicated. However, Vice President Wang and Sister Fangfei had genuine feelings, it wasn't just fooling around. Vice President Wang is an alumnus of the History Department of Peking University, who loves music and often spends public funds flying overseas to listen to symphonies..."
Before Wang Yi's arrest, rumors spread outside claiming that he was involved in irregular operations with some securities companies. For example, after Wei Dong's suicide, many suspected that the "Yujin System" had significant connections with Wang Yi. Moreover, multiple media outlets reported that Pacific Securities, which did not meet the basic IPO requirement of "continuous profitability for 3 years" and did not use the original listed company's code so it didn't count as a shell company, strangely managed to list based on related approvals from two departments unrelated to listing - the Institutional Department and the Office of the CSRC. After Pacific Securities listed, shareholders made approximately 40 times the profit, and among the shareholders were relatives of Wang Yi, such as his younger brother Wang Lei and sister Wang Wei. However, it can currently be confirmed that in the prosecution's charges, Wang Yi's alleged bribery reasons were all about providing assistance for others to obtain loans, and were unrelated to securities companies.
The prosecution charged that Wang Yi's total bribe amount was 11.9 million yuan. His first bribe amount came from Hong Kong businessman Li Tao. Li Tao had known Wang Yi for a long time, and when he obtained a bank loan for a highway project in Hunan, he bribed Wang Yi with 5.38 million yuan. Currently, Li Tao has been arrested.
Afterwards, the inside story was exposed, and it turned out that the audience for "Ode to China" were basically employees organized by various securities companies. The planning for "Ode to China" performances was done by a person named Wei Feng, who is the older brother of the late "Yujin System" leader Wei Dong. After Wang Yi's arrest, "Ode to China" never performed again.
Zhao Wei: accused of receiving a 300,000 yuan appearance fee
Before the case broke, Wang Yi not only had the halo of former vice chairman of the CSRC and deputy governor of the CDB, but he was also hired by Peking University's Guanghua School of Management as a doctoral supervisor and helped establish Guanghua EMBA.
Some people say that Wang Yi actually lacked a strong theoretical foundation in economics, but his position helped Guanghua EMBA make a splash. At the end of the 1990s, Guanghua EMBA's tuition of 10,000 US dollars was not cheap, but most of the over 40 students in the finance class were organized by Wang Yi, and these people all came because of Wang Yi's official background.
However, in the prosecution's evidence presentation, Hong Kong businessman Li Tao testified via video recording. Li Tao said that he opened a department store in Shenzhen and held an opening ceremony where Wang Yi attended and brought along female star Zhao Wei (pronunciation), and later Li Tao gave Zhao Wei a 300,000 yuan appearance fee.
