The "Riding" and "Creating" in the Anime Market
The benefits and value brought by cartoons and anime are increasingly strengthening. Due to the immaturity of China's anime industry chain, compared to Japan and developed countries, there is still a need for effort. Currently, many enterprises have already realized the importance of anime in the industry. However, due to the high comprehensiveness of this industry, many enterprises have no clue on how to enter the field of cartoon animation, let alone find an entry point.
According to traditional practices, to do the cartoon animation industry, there are basically three ways: "riding", "creating", and "stealing".
"Riding" refers to riding on world-famous big brands like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Hello Kitty. But these brands, due to years of accumulation and development, their licensing fees alone make a large number of enterprises retreat. The remaining ones have to fight fiercely for the rights. Even if they manage to secure the copyright after great efforts, it generally comes with a time limit. They might painstakingly build up their business only to see it snatched away by others next year. The rising costs and high threshold prevent many enterprises from entering. I once encountered a client who was in the backpack business. His company has always been focused on the foreign market. A few years ago, they were agents for the "Spiderman" copyright. Due to the intense competition for this copyright, last year they lost the agency rights because their price was lower than others'. This resulted in the discontinuation of that backpack model, causing significant losses. Situations like this aren't just limited to one company; I believe many companies face such problems.
"Creating" becomes an option when "riding" isn't feasible. The usual scenario is similar to what was mentioned above: companies miss out on securing a famous brand's copyright by a small margin. In frustration, the boss slams the table and orders the immediate formation of a design team, hiring staff, setting up a few computers, and starting work. This kind of workshop is a typical case of "closing the door to create a cart." Then, the company executives sit back, daydreaming about a day when a Mickey 2 or Hello Kitty 3 will emerge from here and then sweep the globe...
The result is that most attempts end in failure, with very few successful examples to date. Most quickly disband and close the creative department. Among my many clients, there are similar situations. After investing a lot of energy and time, they realize that the anime industry involves much more specialized knowledge and overall management systems. To delve deeper into this area would require even more cost, time, and human resources.
