In the 1930s, in Foshan, the capital of Chinese martial arts, martial arts were very popular and to enroll more disciples, different sects often held collective competitions to show their strength. Yip Man (played by Donnie Yen) is a modest man with great Kung Fu skills, who does not publicize his skills or run a martial arts school. He only researches martial arts by privately exchanging ideas with his friends at home. Led by Jinshanzhao (played by Shaun Tan), the northern martial artists, in order to make a name for themselves in Foshan, severely defeated the masters of various schools. Jinshanzhao, in order to gain the recognition of Foshan citizens, decided to challenge Yip Man, who stays out of worldly affairs, and spares no efforts to force Yip Man to take action. Encouraged by his wife Zhang Yongcheng (played by Dorothy Tang), Yip Man takes action and thoroughly defeats Jinshanzhao with his proficient Wing Chun Kung Fu. After this battle, Foshan witnessed an intense Wing Chun fever.
