One-line Review:
"Nights in Rodanthe" not only tells us that it's never too late to pursue true love, but also reminds us that it's never too late to rediscover the lost 'self'. Most importantly, it’s about living the life you want.
For most of his life, Ben has lived for others. Everyone around him has some kind of expectation or desire for him, designing how he should live in this world, and pulling Ben toward their imagination—be it a "money-printing machine," a lucky charm, a successful artist, a loyal husband, or an all-knowing father. Yet no one ever asks what Ben truly wants. Surrounded by such people, although it seems unreasonable and even absurd, Ben knows that these people are just like him—clowns who pretend to be something they're not, using every means possible just to survive in this world.
Suddenly, Ben's world goes haywire, starting with the box office failure of his recent bold and dreamlike work, "Fierce," starring Sean Penn. Everything begins to go downhill rapidly, bizarre and chaotic. "Fierce" is undoubtedly a huge disappointment to audiences, not only sparking extraordinary anger from the studio boss Lu (Catherine Keener), but also leading to a heated argument between Ben and the rebellious and drug-addicted director Jeremy (Michael Winslow). Meanwhile, Ben's personal life is in shambles. His ex-wife Carrie (Robin Wright Penn) refuses to take him back, leaving Ben feeling troubled and confused. His daughter Zoe's (Kristen Stewart) behavior is equally perplexing, as he realizes she has grown up overnight. As for his screenwriter friend Scott (Stanley Tucci), he brings nothing but pure anger. This man, who works closely with him while simultaneously flirting with his ex-wife, is clearly a typical two-faced hypocrite.
Lu gives Ben only two weeks to find a film that can be submitted smoothly to the Cannes Film Festival. As if his life wasn't already chaotic enough, the male lead of Ben's new movie, Bruce Willis, loves intimidating others, while Bruce's agent Dick (John Turturro), is completely opposite—so timid that any slight disturbance could make him flee. In the midst of all the madness, betrayal, deception, loss of control, greed, and materialism, Ben spends two painful weeks like being in hell, stumbling forward despite all obstacles toward his goal.
