Introduction:

When good and evil are isolated starkly, they temporarily form an intimate alliance and partnership... Dan Evans is an upright and resilient man living a plain and ordinary life, naturally without any remarkable feats or wondrous adventures worth boasting about. As a former sharpshooter in the Union Army, Dan received a little compensation for his broken leg during the Civil War, allowing him to bring his wife Alice and two sons to live in Arizona where they operated a medium-sized ranch. However, the harsh weather conditions of the west and the rampant corruption and greed shattered Dan's hopes for a new life. Furthermore, a severe drought hit Dan's already barren land, causing large numbers of his livestock to die. Dan was heavily in debt, and his family faced the danger of dying of thirst. Additionally, the owner of the land where the ranch was located wanted to build a railway there for huge profits, so he shamelessly tried every method to evict the Evans family—this undoubtedly added insult to their already dire situation.

As time passed, Dan continued to work hard with his own hands, hoping that one day fortune would smile upon him, but he never mentioned to others how much pain he silently endured that most people couldn't bear. However, he sadly realized that his image as a father was fading in the eyes of his eldest son Will. This 14-year-old boy had long been filled with admiration for the savage western world described in fictional novels, full of thieves and villains, so he looked down on his father's "cowardice"... Even his wife Alice began to question her husband's repeated tolerance.

Just as Dan was caught in the difficulties of life, fate threw him an opportunity: the most notorious criminal of the west, Ben Wade, was captured. He gained his infamous reputation through ruthless highway robberies and a rogue character... As an outstanding strategist and natural leader, Ben led his most trusted lieutenant Charlie Prince and a group of loyal followers across the west. They mostly operated around the Southern Pacific Railroad, not only robbing vast amounts of wealth but also committing unforgivable murders in several robbery cases.

Thus, even though Ben Wade was indeed arrested, getting him to truly face justice was the hardest part. Since the moment Ben was brought to the town and placed under guard, the guards watching over him were constantly attacked by his henchmen... Grayson Butterfield, representing the Southern Pacific Railroad, offered a bounty for volunteers to form an escort team to take Ben to Contention Town, which was about a three-day journey. Only in Contention was there a train specifically designed to transport prisoners that would take Ben to Yuma, Arizona, where he would face a public trial in the federal court.

Seizing this sole opportunity to save the farm and his family, Dan voluntarily joined the escort team. The captain of the escort team was Byron McElroy, an experienced bounty hunter who seemed to have some personal grudge to settle with Ben Wade... Other members of the escort team included Tucker, a local thug; Doc Potter, a gentle veterinarian who was also a pacifist opposed to violence.

However, even with handcuffs and shackles, Ben Wade remained dangerous. Beneath his charming and attractive exterior lay a mind adept at reading others, able to discern even the smallest weaknesses in human nature. Thus, Ben was always looking for opportunities, either to escape or seek revenge—he wouldn't let this matter rest easily.

During the perilous three-day journey to Contention, the number of escort team members kept dwindling... This forced Dan to rediscover the strength buried deep within himself. Therefore, when Ben and Dan, coming from two extreme moral opposites, tested and competed against each other, they surprisingly found common ground and, under environmental pressure, formed an unexpected close alliance.

As the train whistled and headed towards Contention, Dan's initial goal of saving the ranch became more profound and meaningful: he not only rediscovered himself but also taught his son what it really means to be a man.
