Plot:
A gunshot rings out, and a woman falls to the ground with a head wound. Minutes later, police negotiator Robbie Nunally arrives at the scene, only to find architectural engineer Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) holding a gun, while his wife Jennifer lies in a pool of blood. After some painstaking persuasion, Crawford lowers his weapon and provides a confession to his crime. As Robbie looks down at the victim, he is horrified to realize that Jennifer is his unknown lover.
Ambitious and promising young prosecutor Will (Ryan Gosling) is tasked with handling what seems to be a straightforward murder case—complete with a weapon and a written confession. A guilty verdict appears inevitable. Once this trial concludes successfully, Will will officially become a member of a prestigious law firm, ensuring a bright future for himself. However, during the trial, everything takes an unexpected turn—Crawford's gun is not the murder weapon, and Robbie’s affair with the victim casts doubt on the testimony. The court ultimately declares Crawford innocent and releases him.
Is the cautious Crawford truly a victim of a frame-up? Or is he actually a premeditated cold-blooded murderer who has been playing mind games with the police? Faced with Crawford's genius-level intellect, Will, who cannot tolerate failure, resolves to uncover the flaws and evidence, regardless of the cost to his own career. Even the smallest details may hold the most critical clues. In this game of wits, who will emerge as the ultimate winner?
