Plot Summary: Foolish Thief, Witty Detective

Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.), who looks stylish and suave on the outside, is a professional habitual thief. Relying on his intimidating demeanor and blind optimism, he engages in petty theft. Despite being a compulsive thief, he has consistently experienced bad luck. If this continues, he might even face unemployment as a thief. However, Harry is not the type of hardened thug; he has always harbored thoughts of reforming but just doesn't know how to let go.

Finally, luck turns around for Harry. He and his partner rob a toy store in New York on Christmas Eve. Just as they are about to leave with their haul, the store's alarm ruins their plans. In a panic to escape the police, Harry inadvertently stumbles into an audition for a Hollywood detective film. To avoid detection, Harry absentmindedly recites a line, but unexpectedly catches the producer's eye. Before Harry realizes it, he is already on a plane to Los Angeles for a screen test.

In the blink of an eye, clumsy thief Harry steps onto the land of Hollywood dream chasers. He will participate in actor auditions as a candidate to play a detective. To help Harry better get into character, a real private detective is assigned to take him through the experience of professional life. Although this new partner, Perry (Val Kilmer), appears to be a tough guy, he is actually a complete homosexual. From a professional perspective, Perry is sharp and ruthless, lacking patience with Harry, which causes Harry a lot of trouble.
