In the extremely chaotic late Unified Silla period, Yi Gwak (played by Woo-sung Jung), who possesses the ability to see ghosts, joins a royal exorcism team after his fiancée, Lotus (played by Tae-hee Kim), is taken away by an evil spirit. Due to his supernatural abilities, he becomes the top warrior in his unit. However, his teammates, under the influence of the evil spirit, plot a rebellion. Their plan fails, and everyone is executed. Having lost not only the lover more precious than life itself but also his comrades-in-arms who were like brothers, Yi Gwak vows eternal enmity with the demon world and becomes a true exorcist.

One day, however, he unexpectedly travels through a shrine to a mysterious world called "Zhong Tian," where only the dead can arrive.

Zhong Tian is the third world that exists between heaven and earth, a realm for souls preparing to be reborn after forty-nine days. Here, Yi Gwak surprisingly encounters a woman who looks exactly like Lotus. However, this woman insists that she is a celestial being named Xiao Hua and does not recognize Yi Gwak, who is suffering greatly and lamenting bitterly. Coincidentally, the evil spirits that instigated the rebellion are also here and begin to hunt him down. Despite knowing that he could face danger at any moment in this otherworldly space, Yi Gwak decides that he will never leave Lotus again after reuniting with her.

Determined to protect Lotus even at the cost of his own life, Yi Gwak unexpectedly meets his recently wrongfully killed comrades once more. However, they have now turned into real demons. Yi Gwak remains resolute in wanting to bring Lotus back to the mortal world. Facing Lotus, who doesn't recognize him, he still protects and cherishes her as always.
