In the early morning on Japan's Akina Mountain, a Toyota second-hand car, the AE86, gracefully speeds down the slope. The drift speed of the mysterious driver inside surprises everyone. The AE86 stops by Tengen's Tofu Shop, and the sleepy-eyed teenager Tengen Takumi (Jay Chou) returns to the shop. There, he only sees his father Tengen Futa (Tony Ng) passed out drunk in the hall. Takumi helps his father clean up, reminiscing about the past five years of delivering tofu every early morning to the inn on Akina Mountain, making his mood heavy.

Amu's father Rikah Yooichi (Aaron Kwok) runs a gas station where Takumi works part-time after school. Nariyuki Tsushima comes to the gas station to challenge Amu's racing team, and Amu reluctantly accepts the challenge. In the evening, Nariyuki drives his GTR to the starting point of Akina Mountain, where Ryosuke is already waiting. Amu takes up the challenge, but ends up being soundly defeated by Nariyuki on the mountain road that night. While practicing on the mountain road, Nariyuki encounters the mysterious AE86, who easily defeats him. Consequently, Nariyuki and Ryosuke inquire about the AE86 from Amu, knowing that the car belongs to Futa.

Amu pleads with Futa to race against Nariyuki, and hearing about the prowess of the GTR, Futa becomes somewhat intrigued. Ryosuke and Nariyuki show up at the tofu shop, as they've discovered that Futa was once a legendary racing god, and they issue him a challenge. On the night of the challenge, the AE86 ascends the mountain. Amu is shocked to see that it's Takumi who arrives. On the mountain road, the AE86 battles the GTR again, and Takumi uses the ditch-turning technique to defeat it. Ryosuke is even more astonished that Takumi's racing skills are purely based on intuition, with no real understanding. Amu and Takumi face a challenge from Iwaki Koji (Lau Hung). Although Takumi narrowly beats Koji, he is then avenged by Koji's friend Sudo Kyoushi (Jordan Chan). In fierce combat, the AE86 surpasses its mechanical limits, causing the engine to fail. Meanwhile, Amu witnesses Takumi's girlfriend Natsume stepping out of a hotel with another man. Facing challenges to his confidence, friendship, and love, how will Takumi handle it all?
