When the power consumption of Apple's G5 processor was initially too high, Apple once collaborated with P.A. Semi to research a new low-power PowerPC processor. When their investment finally paid off, it resulted in the PWRficient dual-core processor with a maximum CPU power consumption of 25W and a clock speed of 2GHz. However, Apple eventually chose the simpler solution of adopting Intel processors. As a result, P.A. Semi took this processor into the embedded field, which is now known as the PWRficient 1682M processor. This processor integrates dual DDR2 memory controllers, 2MB L2 Cache, and a flexible I/O controller. Nevertheless, things have come full circle. Apple has announced that it will acquire the processor design company P.A. Semi. Perhaps in the future, Apple will return to the PowerPC processor platform and design its own processors.
