Although Apple's Mac has always been positioned against PCs and macOS has consistently competed with Microsoft's Windows, none of this really matters to Microsoft. Microsoft’s approach is: the means don’t matter, only the results do. As long as it succeeds in the end, who cares about the methods used? Microsoft's latest operating system, just like the original Windows XP, borrowed quite a few features from Apple's macOS. Additionally, Microsoft provided several key pieces of software for Apple's Mac early on, including Mac versions of Internet Explorer (IE) and Office. Therefore, it’s not hard to imagine that while Microsoft and Apple are competitors, Microsoft has always had a dedicated team and lab to study the Mac and its operating system. This lab is known as Microsoft's Mac Lab.
