At the graduation ceremony of West Texas A&M University, Stan Sigman, CEO of AT&T Wireless (Cingular), recently presented "the first iPhone in Texas" as a gift to Dr. O’Brien, President of WTAMU, who then held up the iPhone for everyone to see.
AT&T Wireless is the exclusive service provider for Apple's iPhone in the United States, and Sigman is a graduate of WTAMU from 1970. It is reported that the entire process was captured on a Treo smartphone by someone present. If you listen carefully, you can faintly hear it is an iPhone.
Although Apple and AT&T had both previously stated that the iPhone would be launched in June this year, neither party disclosed the exact launch date. However, a recently disclosed internal AT&T email to employees suggests that the launch date might be June 15th.
In the email, AT&T said: "To align with the company’s release of the iPhone, sales staff should plan vacations before June 15 or after July 15." Clearly, AT&T intends to use a month to promote the iPhone.
