New York message: Napster claims that it currently has about 500,000 subscribers, making it the third largest online music service after Apple's iTunes and RealNetworks' Rhapsody. The New York Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that Google is considering a broad alliance with Napster, which could include "full acquisition." Of course, for outsiders, this seems like a good deal.

However, Google quickly responded, stating that it has no plans to acquire Napster and currently has no plans to develop an online music service (aren't they going to compete with iTunes?). Apparently, it believes that its previous services are attractive enough, but who can guarantee that this isn't a precursor to Google delving deeper into the online music business model?
