Emo originally derived from hardcore punk as a kind of music with an artistic flair, but at the end of the 1990s it became an important force in underground rock, appealing to both punk and independent rock musicians of the time. Some emo music leans towards the radical side, filled with complex guitar playing, non-traditional song structures, artistically noisy sounds, and extreme changes in instrumental positions. Other emo music is closer to punk pop, though it still seems somewhat incomprehensible. The lyrics of emo are highly personal, usually either unrestrained poetic verses or personal confessions.
Although emo is indeed less masculine, it remains a direct descendant of hardcore's pursuit of authenticity and anti-commercialism; emo music believes that commercially-oriented music is too fake and contrived to express any genuine emotions. Since emo values real, deep, and tangible emotions over rational analysis, it tends to excessively apply stronger pitches and releases in music than before. However, the best emo music pieces possess a complete power that makes them simultaneously substantive, challenging, and intimate.
Personal opinion:
EMO is a form of music, and EMO singers and bands often have their unique dressing styles. However, this style is often mistaken by many people as merely a FZL (pseudo) individualistic look.
Recommended common EMO bands:
Aiden, My American Heart, The Used, Silverstein, etc.
