Before the invention of liposuction, there was no solution for excessively thick back fat. A plump or obese back squeezed by tightened bra straps into two prominent parts above and below would be embarrassing when wearing thin and transparent summer dresses, making one look much older than their actual age.

Under normal circumstances, the subcutaneous fat on the back is thin and uniform, revealing the contours of the back tissue. It only appears swollen and overly flat when one is obese. In the middle of the back are the spinous processes of the vertebrae, with powerful sacrospinalis muscles on both sides, and further outwards lie the flat areas of the back formed by the ribs and scapula. The characteristic of back fat is that it is flat and relatively tight at the rear, while the fat at the junction with the armpits or hypochondriac region on both sides is loose and accumulates significantly.
