A typhoon is a category of tropical cyclone. In meteorology, according to the World Meteorological Organization's definition, when the sustained wind speed at the center of a tropical cyclone reaches level 12 (i.e., 32.7 meters per second or more), it is called a hurricane or a local synonym. The term "hurricane" is used in the North Atlantic and eastern Pacific Ocean regions, whereas in the western North Pacific (north of the equator, west of the International Date Line, and east of 100°E longitude), the local synonym used is "typhoon". The article introduces the causes of typhoon formation, its classification, naming rules, and the reasons for its dissipation.
