Yao Mountain is located in the northeast of Guilin, about 10 kilometers away from the city center. The boundary between the northeast of Guilin and Lingchuan County is marked by Yao Mountain. The main peak of Yao Mountain has an altitude of 909.3 meters and a relative height of 760 meters, making it the highest peak in Guilin. Truly deserving its reputation as the best place for sightseeing and panoramic views in Guilin tourism. The mountain extends roughly from north to south, towering and grand like a crouching ox, hence its common name "Niushan" (Ox Mountain). About 1.6 to 8 billion years ago, Yao Mountain was originally under the sea. Around 400 million years ago, during the Guangxi movement, it rose above sea level, then sank again into shallow waters. Around 360 million years ago, it was composed of sandstone and shale. Over hundreds of millions of years, with physical weathering playing a major role, the rock body slowly disintegrated, forming the gentle "earth mountain". To this day, debris deposits still remain on the slopes and at the foot of the mountain. According to investigations, the fault zones of Yao Mountain have continuously pushed it higher since the Indosinian movement 200 million years ago, the Yanshan movement 70 million years ago, and the Himalayan movement 2 million years ago, making it the highest peak among Guilin's mountains.
