Among the traditional buildings with large red roofs in the northern part of Yan Garden, there is a pair of eye-catching twin sisters. They are now called South Pavilion and North Pavilion. The other surrounding red buildings are rectangular courtyard-style structures, but these two buildings are square, facing each other from south to north, standing side by side. Together with the present-day Russian Language Building (Sage Hall), they form an independent unit. From old photographs, we can see the changes in their surroundings over different periods. Originally, they were the office buildings for the women's section of Yenching University, commonly known as Twin Buildings (Twins Building). The North Pavilion was named Mai Feng Pavilion, while the South Pavilion was called Gan De Pavilion. Their unified English name was Miner Hall.
