The Songyang Academy, originally named Songyang Temple, is located at the southern foot of Mount Song, 2.5 kilometers to the north of Dengfeng urban district in Henan Province, backed by Junji Peak and facing the Shuangxi River. It gets its name because it sits on the sunny side of Mount Song. It was initially built in the eighth year of Taihe reign period of Northern Wei Dynasty (484 AD), and was known as Songyang Taoist Temple in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and as Taiyi Academy in the Later Zhou Dynasty of Five Dynasties. In the Song Dynasty, it was granted the name Taishi Academy, and Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty presented a plaque and nine classics printed books to the academy. In the second year of Jingyou reign period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1035 AD), it was renamed Songyang Academy. The Songyang Academy had been abandoned during the Southern Song Dynasty and was rebuilt during the Qing Kangxi reign period.
