Guanyin is the translated meaning of the Sanskrit, it was said that the name "Guanyin" without the Chinese character "shi" was used in the Tang Dynasty to avoid conflicting with the name of Emperor Taizong Li Shimin. He is the left assistant of Amitabha Buddha. Buddhism believed that he is merciful, and if people in trouble just need to chant his name, "the Bodhisattva will view their voices", then he will go to save them, hence the name Guanyin.
