Pet Information Network reported recently that the number of patients bitten by puppies and kittens has obviously increased. There is at least one case per day, sometimes reaching four or five cases. Hot weather is the main reason for small animals' bad temper, and in summer people often wear shorts and short sleeves, which makes them very susceptible to bites from small animals. For this reason, Director Jiang of the Prevention Department of Qingdao Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that citizens should keep a certain distance from small animals in summer to avoid accidental injury.

"Beibei is very gentle and never bites people. Last night I don't know what happened, it suddenly bit my calf," said Ms. Liu, a citizen who limped to the emergency surgery department of Haici Hospital on the morning of August 11. According to her, on the evening of August 10, she was watching TV at home while holding her pet dog Beibei, and unexpectedly got bitten by it. A cut appeared on her calf and blood flowed continuously. Ms. Liu endured the pain and washed the wound with soapy water for a long time but still felt uneasy, so she didn't sleep all night and came to the hospital early on August 11 for treatment. "I have raised Beibei for four or five years, and it has deep feelings for us. It rarely barks even when strangers come over. No one provoked it, so why did it suddenly go crazy and bite its owner?" Ms. Liu was puzzled about Beibei's sudden outburst.

"Summer is the peak season for rabies, we see at least one patient bitten by pets every day," said Dr. Sun Dongning from the Emergency Surgery Department of Haici Hospital. Sometimes they even receive four or five cases in a day, which is significantly more than in the previous months. The main reasons are the hot summer weather, people wearing thin clothing, and more exposed skin, increasing the chances of being bitten or scratched during close contact with pets. Meanwhile, the sultry weather easily makes dogs irritable and impulsive, and even normally gentle pets can suddenly become angry and exhibit aggressive behavior.

According to the Preventive Vaccination Clinic of the Qingdao Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 30,000 people are bitten by animals each year in the city, with July and August being the peak period and the number of patients significantly increasing compared to the previous months. "Once bitten or scratched by an animal, it is best to immediately wash the wound with soapy water, then rinse repeatedly with clean water for ten minutes, and then go to a professional hospital as soon as possible to get vaccinated against rabies," reminded Director Jiang of the Prevention Department of the Qingdao Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. From a preventive perspective, citizens should keep a certain distance from cats and dogs in summer, try to avoid close contact, vaccinate their pets against rabies on time, and not provoke unfamiliar animals, especially stray dogs on the street.
