BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least four children were killed and 100 injured when two primary school buildings collapsed following a powerful earthquake that struck central China on Monday.

Another person was killed when a water tower fell in the city of Mianyang, according to China's official news agency Xinhua.

The quake was measured at a magnitude of 7.8 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The students were killed in the Chongqing municipality, located approximately 215 miles (345 kilometers) southeast of the earthquake's epicenter, Xinhua reported.

The Three Gorges Dam in Wenchuan, near Chongqing, remained undamaged, a spokesperson confirmed.

In the two hours following the initial quake, five additional earthquakes occurred in the same region, with magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 6.0, according to the USGS.
