Dong Yang: Triple Considerations Beyond School Bus Safety Standards 18671079399

After intense work and heated debates, the formulation of school bus safety standards has come to a temporary conclusion. The biggest point of contention during this period was the "long-nose" issue. The reason behind this problem lies in how much emphasis should be placed on safety, while also reflecting the underlying competition for interests among some manufacturers. I will not comment on this matter. However, three related issues, I believe, are worth considering:

Firstly, can safety be achieved solely through the vehicle?

Secondly, should cost be taken into account while pursuing "safety"?

Thirdly, should we consider utilizing more existing bus resources?

In fact, the public's great attention to school bus safety standards stems from several consecutive school bus accidents that have recently occurred. As a result, relevant government departments have acted swiftly and formulated these safety standards. I do not think that school bus safety standards should not be addressed, but I believe there may be more important considerations:

First, the issue of wealth disparity and regional economic imbalance. Parents from better-off families drive their children to school, and economically developed areas have comprehensive public transportation systems. However, the regions where school bus accidents resulting in fatalities occur are underdeveloped areas, involving children from poor families. Actually, children who ride on "non-compliant school buses" are not the most disadvantaged.

Second, overloading and collisions with other vehicles are actually management issues, reflecting the overall safety and legal awareness of society. Focusing solely on whether school buses meet high safety standards cannot solve these problems.

Third, what should the government focus on? I believe it should be guided by the scientific development concept and comprehensively analyze and address issues according to the requirements of a harmonious society. Before formulating school bus safety standards that emphasize safety, at least issues such as educational investment, traffic safety (not just school buses), educational resource planning, and citizens' legal awareness should be considered. Overemphasizing school bus safety standards might lead to generalizations or even avoidance of more pressing issues.
