People in the Alps have always been good at making life livable on steep slopes, and one of the most spectacular examples is the zigzagging road up to Stelvio Pass in Italy. With 60 hairpin turns and a summit elevation of more than 9,000 feet, it's a jaw-dropper. The original route was built in the 1820s and has changed only slightly in the two centuries since.
