People's Daily Online, Beijing, March 9 (reported by Libo Fu) - China has 350 million smokers, the highest number in the world. While over 540 million people are victims of passive smoking, including 180 million children under the age of 15; in 2000 nearly one million deaths were attributed to smoking which exceeds the total number of deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis, traffic accidents and suicide. There is a marked increase in diseases associated with smoking and second hand smoke in China such as strokes, coronary heart disease, diabetes, lung cancer and breast cancer. If no measures are taken, it is estimated that the death toll will reach two million by 2020.
