Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, February 27th - According to a report by Xinhua News Agency reporters stationed overseas: A strong earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred at around 27th local time in Chile early in the morning, and has so far caused at least 122 deaths. The tsunami triggered by the earthquake has already caused serious damage on the southern islands of Chile, and the tsunami warning scope has been expanded to all of Central America as well as Pacific countries and regions.

According to a report by the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 3:34 AM local time (14:34 Beijing Time), with the epicenter located near the sea off Maule, which is 320 kilometers southwest of Santiago, the capital of Chile, and the hypocentral depth was about 60 kilometers.

After the earthquake, aftershocks continued. So far, more than 20 aftershocks above magnitude 5.0 have occurred.
