Five Dominicans were trapped at sea for 15 days and survived by eating the bodies of their deceased companions, eventually being rescued. However, one woman unfortunately died in the hospital.
According to an Associated Press report on August 3, Dominican officials said on August 2 that more than 33 Dominican citizens set sail last month to head to Puerto Rico. Along the way, the captain abandoned the ship, leaving the passengers lost at sea. During this time, people died from time to time, and their bodies were thrown into the sea.
The US Coast Guard found five survivors near the Turks and Caicos Islands on August 1 and sent them to the hospital for treatment. The only woman among the five succumbed to her condition on August 2, while the remaining four suffered from dehydration and leg muscle atrophy.
A Dominican official said that the survivors endured 15 days without food by eating the bodies of their dead companions. Every year, hundreds of Dominicans take homemade small boats across the sea to reach Puerto Rico.
