Distribution: It is produced in the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, etc. It is cultivated in all provinces south of the Yangtze River. There are also distributions in Japan.
Characteristics of Podocarpus macrophyllus: The tree crown is broad-ovate. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, with acute apex and cuneate base. The midvein is raised on both sides. The surface is dark green, and the back is gray-green, sometimes covered with white powder. The leaves are closely arranged and spirally alternate. Plants are usually dioecious but occasionally monoecious. Seeds are ovoid with black sarcotesta, growing on fleshy and swollen arils. The arils are deep red, sweet and edible. Flowering period is in May, and seed maturity period is in October. Commonly cultivated varieties include narrow-leaved Podocarpus, which has narrower leaves tapering into a long sharp tip; columnar Podocarpus, with smaller leaves that are obtuse or rounded at the apex; small-leaved Podocarpus, with leaves densely clustered at the tips of branches, spirally arranged, relatively narrow, and bluntly rounded at the apex; short-pointed leaved Podocarpus, with extremely small leaves; and variegated Podocarpus, with white spots on the leaf surface.
