Yesterday morning, the first-instance public trial of the "Guangdong steel mafia" case with 37 suspects was held at Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court. This is the case with the most defendants in the history of Guangzhou trials. The gang was mainly composed of people from Hengshan County and Hengdong County of Hunan Province. They specifically intercepted steel-carrying trucks at expressway exits from Hunan to Guangdong, and by means of robbery, kidnapping, extortion, and unlawful detention, controlled the steel market of 21 construction sites in 9 cities including Guangzhou and Foshan in Guangdong, obtaining huge illegal profits.
The gang was charged by the procuratorate with committing 12 crimes including forced transaction, provoking troubles, and illegal possession of guns and ammunition.
