On June 11, the US Navy destroyer "John McCain" had its towed sonar collide with a Chinese submarine. The incident is currently considered an accident, with the explanation leaning towards the US sonar failing to detect the submarine. I believe the actual situation might be much more complicated. Every "close encounter" between China and the US, isn't it always "a smile hiding a knife"? On the surface, the hands that appear to shake in friendship are secretly squeezing each other hard.
Under normal circumstances, submarines do not actively collide with towed sonar. The American side believes that the towed sonar cable may have entangled the propeller. Additionally, there's another danger where the cable could get stuck in the submarine's diving planes. Both situations pose significant dangers to submarines. Submarine underwater ascension, descent, and attitude control require both the diving planes and ballast water adjustment to work together. In cases of no power or a stuck rudder, the submarine basically loses its underwater maneuverability and can only surface. Especially when the diving plane is stuck at a large angle, accidents are likely to occur, requiring the emergency drainage device of the main ballast tank to come into play.
