As a social issue, the phenomenon of beggars has been documented in various historical texts throughout the ages. However, there has been little scholarly attention paid to the phenomenon of itinerant beggars in minority ethnic villages during feudal times. Through weathered "No Beggars Allowed" stone inscriptions, let us attempt to interpret the epigraphic materials from the She ethnic villages of the Foning Prefecture (Min Dong) during the late Qing Dynasty. We will analyze the process of social security management with a focus on "prohibiting begging" and "limiting begging," and perceive the interaction among three forces: villagers, beggars, and the government.
