Can a retroverted uterus cause infertility? Experts from the Guangzhou Air Force Logistics Hospital introduce: When the uterine body tilts backwards towards the rectum, it is referred to as a retroverted uterus. There are two types of retroverted uterus: tilted back and tilted back with flexion. If the longitudinal axis of the uterus does not change but the entire uterus tilts backward, it is called a tilted back uterus. If the uterus tilts backward and the junction between the cervix and the corpus forms an acute angle, it is called tilted back with flexion. The former is more common while the latter is less so. The common cause is ligament relaxation due to multiple deliveries, or damage to the pelvic floor diaphragm and the base of the broad ligament.
In the deep part of the vagina, behind the cervix, there is a dome-shaped cavity called the vaginal fornix. After ejaculation during intercourse, semen tends to accumulate here, allowing the cervical opening of the uterus that tilts backward and downward to be immersed in the semen, facilitating sperm to easily pass through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity to meet the egg for fertilization. When the uterus is retroverted, the cervix tilts forward and upward, making it difficult for the cervical opening to be immersed in the semen, significantly reducing the chances of conception. Therefore, a retroverted uterus can affect pregnancy and is considered one type of uterine infertility.
A retroverted uterus generally does not affect sexual life, but it may impact fertility. If you plan to conceive, you can change your position during intercourse, adopting a position where the woman kneels on all fours, allowing the semen to be ejaculated closer to the anterior fornix near the cervical opening, creating favorable conditions for the sperm to enter the uterus. Alternatively, you can adopt a normal position during intercourse and immediately after, the woman should lie face down with a pillow under her abdomen and rest quietly for 30 minutes, enabling the sperm to smoothly enter the cervical opening. These methods can improve the conception rate for a retroverted uterus.
For a uterus with good mobility, being retroverted alone will not be a simple cause of infertility. However, a retroverted uterus that is fixed by surrounding adhesions is often caused by pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis, which usually also affects the fallopian tubes and ovaries, making it a common cause of infertility.
