Patients with epilepsy often lack magnesium, especially those who need long-term medication. For example, long-term use of anti-epileptic drugs can easily lead to osteoporosis. Besides a high-calcium diet, attention should also be paid to magnesium intake. An adult contains 20-25 grams of magnesium in the body, about half of which is concentrated in the bones. The magnesium in the bones cannot be supplied for cellular use. Regarding the issue of whether irregular eating habits can cause epilepsy, experts point out that it varies from person to person. If there is a lack of magnesium, it can not only affect bone formation but also cause muscle tremors and mental tension. Foods rich in magnesium include millet, corn, red beans, soybeans, dried tofu, green vegetables, celery, beef liver, chicken, etc. Adult men need 350 mg of magnesium daily to maintain magnesium balance.
Dietary Precautions for Epilepsy Patients
1. Eat more acidic foods and less salt:
Regarding the diet of epilepsy patients, the first rule is to eat more acidic foods and less salt. Acidic foods provide the body with abundant vitamin C and vitamin B6, which are beneficial for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, thus making up for some of the neurotransmitter deficiencies in epilepsy patients, especially primary epilepsy patients, and reducing the frequency of seizures. Traditional acidic foods include peanuts, walnuts, pork, beef, chicken, duck, goose, fish, shrimp, eggs, etc. Epilepsy patients can adjust their diet accordingly and reasonably combine these foods.
2. Eat more legumes and grains:
The second dietary rule for epilepsy patients is to eat more legumes and grains. Studies have shown that legume and grain foods such as soybeans, broad beans, and wheat contain rich trace elements of manganese. Surveys show that one-third of children with epilepsy have lower serum manganese levels than normal children. There was a case of a 15-year-old patient whose serum manganese was half of that of normal children. Therefore, eating more legumes and grains can make up for the insufficient intake of manganese in epilepsy patients. According to other studies, normal brain cells contain a certain amount of phosphatase substances, but epilepsy patients severely lack this enzyme in their brains. Since bean sprouts are rich in nitrophosphatase substances, eating bean sprouts can supplement the deficiency of phosphatase and alleviate the condition.
3. Control water intake:
The third dietary rule for epilepsy patients is to control water intake. Experts believe: "The hypothalamus is the water regulation center of the human body. A large amount of liquid entering the body will increase the burden on the hypothalamus, thereby inducing epilepsy." Moreover, some epilepsy patients often experience sudden seizures during the process of holding urine, probably due to excessive bladder filling caused by overdrinking, resulting in strong electrical impulses and abnormal discharges of neurons.
