Recently, a virus named Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) has been prevalent. HFMD is a communicable disease caused by enterovirus, which usually occurs among infants and children. It can cause blisters on hands, feet and oral cavity. Individual patients may suffer from complications such as myocarditis, pulmonary edema and aseptic meningitis. More than 20 types of enteroviruses can trigger HFMD. The common pathogens include Group A Coxsackievirus type 16, 4, 5, 9 and 10, Group B Coxsackievirus type 2 and 5, and Enterovirus 71. Group A Coxsackievirus 16 (Cox A16) and Enterovirus 71 (EV 71) are the most common pathogens that cause HFMD.
