Experiencing the Master's Elegance, Feeling the Charm of Psychology: Reflections from Li Zixun’s Family Therapy Training Program

The two sentences from Teacher Li that touched me most were: “The highest realm for a psychological counselor is to become a person, showing care from one person to another. When you become a person, you yourself possess therapeutic functions.” This is truly an insight into life from someone who has been through it all, so simple and yet so intimate! This sentence enlightened me. Counselors are not gods or saviors; when we truly become a person, we see the world with human eyes, exuding human warmth. Anyone with you will feel this warmth and regain a sense of being human. Too many people have been bound and suppressed by thoughts, concepts, and culture for too long. The intense conflict has made them forget who they are and how to be human, which is why they fall ill. Psychological counselors help them return to their original state, becoming real, living people!

The other sentence that deeply moved me was: "Psychological counselors should jump out of the theoretical system of psychology, return to the intuitive system, and use your present feelings to experience the visitor." Indeed, our brains are filled with too many thoughts, theories, concepts, and methods. We are accustomed to using thought and concepts to look at people and things, but we ignore the natural perception ability of our bodies. This is precisely the most direct, sensitive, and true "detector" that nature has given us humans to feel ourselves and the outside world. Many psychological disorders are caused by the solidification of thoughts, theories, and concepts. While theory has brought progress to human society, it also brings constraints and limitations to humans themselves. When a person is deeply trapped in the cage of theory and concept, he cannot see the truth, only his own version, unrelated to facts.

Therefore, when a psychological counselor puts aside their prejudices and feels the existence of a life with their heart, they approach the truth of things, making it possible to find the key to the problem. Next, it's just a matter of choosing what method to use. So, to be a good psychological counselor, learning theoretical knowledge is important, but more importantly, improving one's perception ability, making oneself an empty, sensitive, and insightful person.

Taking Teacher Li Zixun’s class, I gained a lot. But as a psychology enthusiast, whether I can truly understand the essence of the course, as Teacher Li often says, "Who knows?" The master leads you to the door, but cultivation depends on the individual.
