We know that there are two types of common enema: one is glycerin preparation, and the other is mannitol and magnesium sulfate preparation. Although the components of the two preparations are different, their principles of action are basically the same. They both use the high concentration of glycerin or mannitol, namely hyperosmotic effect, to allow more water to seep into the intestinal cavity, soften the stool, stimulate the intestinal wall, reflexively induce defecation reaction, plus its lubricating effect, which can make the stool easier to pass.

If used frequently, the rectum will become less sensitive to the stimulation of enema, and the effect will become worse, which may easily lead to habitual constipation. Therefore, we (especially babies) should be cautious when using it for constipation.

Some constipations are caused by disease factors, so we should strive for early examination, early treatment, and early prevention. The repeated use of enema may mask its etiology and fail to solve the problem fundamentally.

Change the diet structure: Pay attention to a balanced diet, avoid overeating high-protein foods such as eggs, beef, shrimp, and crab, and try to eat more vegetables and fruits. Vegetable juice, orange juice, honey water, tomato juice, and orange juice are also good choices.

Develop good bowel habits. It is recommended to defecate once a day, preferably after dinner. For people with constipation, they can do squatting exercises before defecation to increase abdominal pressure, or massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction to promote intestinal peristalsis, thereby achieving the purpose of defecation.
