Avastin was the first new drug approved by the US FDA to play an anti-cancer role by inhibiting angiogenesis. It is one of several current anti-angiogenic agents and can inhibit the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Recent studies have shown that this drug is effective in treating neovascularization and exudative lesions in the eye, and it is inexpensive.
