From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), impotence has many clinical patterns, and kidney deficiency is just one of them. It manifests as weakness and soreness in the waist and knees, cold intolerance, and loose stools. This is mostly due to excessive indulgence in sexual activity, which depletes the yang energy of the kidneys. In such cases, various Chinese herbs for tonifying the kidneys and strengthening yang can be selected, such as deer antler, ginseng, and deer penis.
1. Excessive thinking leading to impotence, which consumes the heart fire and damages the kidney yin. Symptoms include weakness and soreness in the waist and knees, insomnia with frequent dreams, and heat intolerance. In this case, drugs that clear the heart and nourish the kidneys should be selected, such as raw rehmannia, white peony, and Cornus officinalis. If one blindly takes kidney-tonifying and yang-strengthening drugs, it will obviously have the opposite effect and worsen the condition.
2. Impotence caused by overeating rich and greasy foods or excessive smoking and drinking. Symptoms include a bitter taste in the mouth, irritability, low back pain, perineal distension and pain, and yellow urine. Only drugs that clear liver and gallbladder damp-heat should be selected, such as gentiana, scutellaria, and phellodendron.
3. Impotence caused by mental stress or side effects of certain medications does not require any kidney-tonifying drugs. When the nervous emotions are relieved or the related drugs are discontinued, impotence will heal on its own.
Moreover, sexual health experts estimate that about 30% of men with impotence will find that even after taking yang-enhancing drugs, their conditions do not improve significantly. These patients who cannot benefit from such drugs include those with diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
When humans eat, they need to inhale oxygen to break down food and convert it into energy. During the oxidation process, oxygen produces free radicals, which decompose food through these free radicals.
After breaking down the food, if free radicals are not eliminated, they will cause damage within the human body. They may destroy cells and tissues of a certain organ at minimum, or invade the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the human body at maximum, triggering diseases. Patients with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc., produce excessive free radicals in their bodies, leading to oxidative fatigue.
Therefore, for treatment through dietary therapy and yang-enhancing drugs, the treatment should be tailored to the specific symptoms. One should not overly rely on yang-enhancing drugs but should seek systematic treatment at a regular hospital in a timely manner.
