Spring is another dry season, and improper diet can easily cause internal heat. Be careful not to invite disaster upon yourself. Once you experience internal heat, you can eat seasonal fruits and vegetables to reduce it during spring. You should also eat more sweet and refreshing fresh fruits and tender vegetables, and less chicken or cured meat that easily causes internal heat.
First Fire: Stomach Fire
Symptoms: Gastrointestinal symptoms include burning stomach pain, abdominal distension, dry mouth, bad breath, loose stools, constipation, swollen gums, poor appetite, etc. Stomach fire can be divided into two types: deficiency and excess. Deficiency fire shows mild cough, poor appetite, constipation, abdominal distension, red tongue, and little coating on the tongue; Excess fire manifests as upper abdomen discomfort, dry and bitter mouth, hard stool.
Stomach fire refers to stomach heat. For those who consume excessive alcohol, spicy food, rich flavors, or greasy foods, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) calls this condition "stomach fire," usually caused by damp-heat and food stagnation. TCM believes that regulating stomach fire should follow the principles of clearing heat and removing stagnation. It requires dietary restraint - eating less overly hot-natured or sweet greasy foods. In terms of diet, one should increase consumption of yellow-green vegetables and seasonal fruits to supplement vitamins and minerals, and pay appropriate attention to oral hygiene. For medicinal therapy, herbs such as Sichuan Fritillary Bulb, Cotton Grass Flower, Lotus Seed Core, and Ophiopogon can be used to clear stomach fire.
